Introduction

My name is Timéo Chabal and I am a second-year student on the BUT in Computer Science at IUT Clermont Auvergne, on the Aubière campus. The BUT is a three-year French undergraduate degree that pairs coursework with team projects. I came to development after a general Baccalauréat in Mathematics and Physics-Chemistry, passed with merit, out of a taste for science subjects and problem solving.

My specialisation is mobile application development, within the track called “Application development: design, build, validate”. In practice, I am learning to build an application end to end: understand a need, model the data, write the interface and the business logic, then test it and ship it.

What I can build

Through my coursework projects and my own side projects, I have learned to build complete applications rather than exercises:

Mobile apps: cross-platform interfaces in C# / .NET MAUI and XAML, my second-year specialisation
Desktop apps: Onitama, a board game built in a pair, with a full graphical interface and complete game logic
Command-line tools: a stock management tool in C, with the data saved to files
Websites: responsive HTML / CSS, including this portfolio, written and deployed by hand
Databases: relational modelling, writing SQL queries, joins and aggregates
Back-end & automation: a Discord bot in Node.js consuming a REST API, Bash scripts on Linux

Four things I bring

Rigour
Checking and testing before shipping, rather than hoping nobody looks.
Autonomy
Getting started without being told what to do, digging on my own, and only asking for help with a precise question.
Teamwork
Writing code my project partner can pick up, and taking criticism on mine.
Persistence
Staying on a problem until I actually understand it, instead of working around it.

See how I define each one, and where I have put it into practice →

What drives me

Beyond coursework, what keeps me interested in computing is the challenge of solving hard problems and constantly picking up new technologies. What I am looking for in an internship: working on a real product, used by real people, and testing what I learn in class against the constraints of the job.
